Catholic Education

All children have a right to an integral, innovative and high-quality education, which promotes the growth of students who will transform their communities and the world.

Responding to the Evolving Challenges Young Scholars Face Today

GHR's Education initiative began as four $1 million grants to the Archdiocese, the University of St. Thomas, Marquette University, and St. Catherine University. Over time, the initiative has evolved into two distinct program areas, Catholic Schools and Higher Education, that operate under one banner. As part of our long-term racial equity commitment, GHR is exploring how the two program areas might be more intentionally centered around racial equity.

A Shared Vision of Just and Inclusive Learning Communities

GHR serves our partners' vision and limitless potential for good through academic intervention, leadership development, and sustainable operations in Catholic schools, while supporting the capacity building of three higher education institutions.

GHR is working to support BIPOC students by:

  • Connecting  young scholars to Catholic high schools preparing BIPOC students for the rigor of college
  • Building the capacity of higher education institutions to serve BIPOC students in improved ways
  • Exposing students to jobs of the future before college

Case Study: On Solid Ground

In 2019, things were looking dire for Risen Christ Catholic School, a dual-immersion K-8 Catholic school located in Minneapolis’ Powderhorn Park neighborhood. School administrators and members of the school board were seriously considering closing the school down. It was an all-too-common discussion at a time when many Catholic schools experiencing similar challenges were closing at an alarming rate.

Yet through creativity and community collaboration, Risen Christ has remained afloat. This case study details the story of how, offering tools for funders that are considering helping struggling institutions pull themselves out from under the burden of debt.

Stories from Education and Partners

Grant-seeker Information
GHR works to respond to the needs of our communities in Minneapolis and around the world, with our focus on existing partners and individuals they serve. Unfortunately, that means we are unable to fund many extremely worthwhile efforts. While opportunities for partnership may be reviewed by GHR staff, we are unable to respond to every unsolicited request.
