Design-Build Institute of America: Design-Build Sparks Meaningful Social Impact Globally

From Design-Build Institute of America:

"Recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Design Build Institute of America in 2007, the Opus Group founder Gerald Rauenhorst pioneered the idea that streamlined project funding/purchasing and integrated cross-functional teams deliver elaborate projects faster, more smoothly and with more effective outcomes. He challenged industry norms beginning in the 1960s to benefit his clients while growing the Opus Group into one of the largest multidisciplinary real estate development design and construction firms in the world.

Rauenhorst's legacy in design-build extends far and wide--as far as Zambia, Cambodia, the Central African Republic and beyond--through the family foundation he and his wife Henrietta founded in 1965, GHR Foundation. At first blush, the design-build approach to delivering university residence halls, corporate campuses and sports stadiums may seem to have little application to philanthropy and global development. Looking deeper, however, one can see many of the same principles in play creating models, forming symbiotic teams, sketching a plan of action, consulting on plans and helping shape the results..."

From Pioneer Press:

"St. Thomas and the foundation spent more than a year designing the fellowship. [Amy] Rauenhorst Goldman said they wanted to raise the university’s profile and encourage others to give.

“We really want to have this gift inspire other gifts,” she said.

The fellowship is based on merit, but Rauenhorst Goldman said first-generation students will get preference. Financially needy fellows can also get grants for room and board..."

Star Tribune: Philanthropy, A Love Story

From Star Tribune:

[Gerald] Rauenhorst, with the support and savvy of his wife, Henrietta, grew up to become one of Minnesota’s most successful contractors. His company, the Opus Group — a series of commercial real estate development, construction and design companies — helped sculpt the Minneapolis skyline. The couple also became one of the state’s most generous philanthropic teams, quietly giving millions to local and global causes close to their hearts until their deaths in 2010 and 2014.

“GHR has a really important voice that contributes to greater understanding of peace-building in conflicts and peace-building among religions. That’s really a critical issue for us to grapple with globally,” said Nancy Lindborg, president of Washington, D.C.-based United States Institute of Peace, which is collaborating on the Dalai Lama conference. “We work with other foundations, but the depth of the partnership with GHR really stands out…

Devex: Time to reinvent the RFP?

From Devex:

When GHR Foundation decided to commit $3 million over three years to social innovators bridging the gaps between “peace, prosperity, and planet in radically new ways,” the team determined that a traditional RFP process would not allow it to move as quickly, nor seek out as many perspectives, as it needed. So the organization partnered with the open innovation platform OpenIDEO, which grew out of the Silicon Valley-based firm known for its work in human-centered design, a process that is all about designing with and not for the end user.

“We’ve been involved in global work for a long time, but with the invitation-only approach of deep partnership and long-term goals, we were wondering, ‘What are we missing that is out there?’” Amy Rauenhorst Goldman, CEO of GHR Foundation, told Devex...

Thompson Reuters Foundation: Mangrove-Planting Drones on a Mission to Restore Myanmar Delta

From Thompson Reuters Foundation News:

"Fast-dwindling mangroves in Myanmar's low-lying Ayeyarwady Delta, ravaged by decades of deforestation and conversion of land for agriculture and aquaculture, could find an unlikely saviour - drones.

Mangroves protect coastlines in the face of storms and rising sea levels, absorb carbon from the atmosphere, and boost fish stocks, experts say.

Yet Myanmar has lost more than 1 million hectares (about 2.5 million acres) of mangroves..."

From Fast Company:

"For the past five years, a group of villagers in the delta of the Irrawaddy River in Myanmar has painstakingly planted 2.7 million mangrove trees in an attempt to begin to restore an ecosystem that has been disappearing for decades. But the work is laborious, and the local nonprofit guiding the work wants to cover a much larger area–so they’re now turning to tree-planting drones.

The drones, from the startup BioCarbon Engineering, can plant as many as 100,000 trees in a single day, leaving the local community to focus on..."

The Chronicle of Philanthropy: Foundation Takes Radical Approach to Transparency in Grant Making

From The Chronicle of Philanthropy:

"Dylan Mathews, chief executive of Peace Direct, has learned to wait. And wait.

Like many nonprofit leaders who depend on foundation cash, Mr. Mathews is used to the months of dead time that follow a grant application. That silence, he says, often ends with a simple thumbs up or thumbs down.

The response following his application..."
